Much Birthday: Shiba Inu Inspiration Kabosu Turns 16

Kabosu is the Shiba behind all your favorite memecoins. 

Yesterday, Kabosu’s owner Atsuko Sato announced via Instagram that the world’s most famous Shiba Inu celebrated its sweet 16th birthday.

It’s quite the milestone for the pooch: the average dog lifespan is between 10 to 13 years. Not to mention, Sato saved Kabosu as a puppy from an uncertain fate. “She was a pedigreed dog from a puppy mill, and when the puppy mill closed down, she was abandoned along with 19 other Shiba dogs,” she told The Verge back in 2013. “Some of them were adopted, but the rest of them were killed.”

Kabosu first rose to fame thanks to its quizzical face and a Redditor’s infamous misspelling. The initial post only received 266 upvotes, but over time the one-off comment became one of the internet’s most recognizable memes, eventually being profiled in magazines, and inspiring the OG memecoin Dogecoin.

Dogecoin, famously, was conceived as a satire of cryptocurrency, and satirize it has all the way to a market cap of 35 billion USD, as of press time. Though that impressive number is nowhere near as impressive as its all-time high market cap of 88 billion USD the cryptocurrency achieved back in May.

Kabosu’s influence doesn’t stop with Dogecoin. The lazily named Shiba Inu recently overtook Dogecoin, and as in 9th place in market cap. As well, Dogelon Mars recently snuck into the top 100 briefly. Doge-related coins even got their own name from Vitalik Buterin: “Dog Coins.”
