17 NFL Players That Fell Down The Crypto Rabbit Hole
If you believe the Monday after the Super Bowl should be a holiday and think crypto is GMI, this is the list for you.
Out of the four major American sports leagues, the NFL seems to have by far the most crypto-involved players. That’s probably because every team has a roster of 53, which is by far the largest roster size of any of the major sports. But regardless of the raw numbers versus percentages, the NFL as a league is moving further into crypto.
Case in point: the NFL’s recent lobbying of the U.S. government for the use of cryptocurrency. Considering that, it’s safe to say that the seventeen NFLers on this list are just the beginning of crypto adoption by the league, and its players.
Covered:
- Bitcoin
- Ethereum
- BAYC
- Solana
- Voyager
- DeFi Kingdoms
- Chainlink Socks
Tom Brady
SMH…I’ve seen better from you PFT. Over here we just buy the dip! https://t.co/1iJq0JTUUh
— Tom Brady (@TomBrady) May 19, 2021
Perhaps the biggest NFL crypto bull of them all is the 7 time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady. Not only does he have equity in FTX, he’s also started his own successful NFT market place — which recently got VC funding. Now that the QB is retired, he can put all his free time into crypto.
Mac Jones
Mac Jones will forever be known as Brady’s predecessor. So it was fitting that he got his entire offensive line Bitcoin for Christmas. Great way to make his teammates miss the other guy less.
“He did an outstanding job. We got a big haul over here…One of the best efforts, especially by a rookie, to show appreciation and wish us a Merry Christmas”. One of Mac Jones’ teammates Ted Karras.
Odell Beckham
Odell Beckham is getting chirped lately for taking his salary in Bitcoin. Though, those claiming he’s lost money don’t seem to understand how realized/unrealized profits work. Beckham has made over 75 million USD over the course of his career. He can afford to wait out this bearish trend.

Russell Okung
Pay me in Bitcoin.
— Okung ?? (@RussellOkung) May 14, 2019
Okung is probably the OG NFL crypto bull. The All-Pro left tackle first tweeted back in 2019 that he wanted to receive his salary in Bitcoin. It wasn’t the until the 2020 season until it finally happened. We all know how 2021 went for Bitcoin — and for Okung. Dizzying highs, some lows, and still up a lot from 2020.
Aaron Rodgers
Aaron Rodgers is a bit of a latecomer, having first announced his interest in Bitcoin in November 2021. The mercurial quarterback did so with a Bitcoin giveaway through the Cash App. Since then, he hasn’t said much on the subject, but at the time, he noted on Twitter, “I believe in Bitcoin & the future is bright.”
Dez Bryant
I still think Ethereum is stronger than Bitcoin…my opinion
— Dez Bryant (@DezBryant) February 7, 2022
The former NFL star wide receiver is definitely an Ethereum bull, as evidenced by the tweet above. But he’s not just an investor. Bryant has championed learning about and properly understanding how to use Metamask in order to not get swindled. He’s even fan of Chainlink — built on Ethereum. What do you think of his socks?
I like my socks @chainlink ?? pic.twitter.com/uGA2YicKzm

Saquon Barkley
Star running back Saquon Barkley announced back in August during an appearance on Anthony Pompliano’s The Best Business Show that he would be taking his endorsements in Bitcoin. The reason? Inflation.
“You see inflation, you see how high it is right now, and you learn that you can’t save yourself to wealth. You can’t,… That’s why I’m going to be taking my marketing money in Bitcoin,” Barkley told Pomp.
Trevor Lawrence
The first overall pick in 2021 NFL Draft Trevor Lawrence, didn’t waste much time getting that money after college — college football famously doesn’t pay its players despite being a big money enterprise. Lawrence signed up with FTX App (then Blockfolio) for an endorsement deal.
Eric Ebron
Just in time for crystalvale, welcome
— Lil b ??(?????,??) (@BasedgodCrypto) January 20, 2022
This has to be the most random NFL crypto story, but I’d also argue it’s the best example of the mainstreaming of crypto. Pro Bowl tight end Eric Ebron tweeted out his interest in Harmony’s DeFi Kingdoms. To those uninitiated, it’s a play-to-earn/DeFi merger no one knew they wanted until they did.
Ndamukong Suh
Last fall, long-time NFL star Ndamukong Suh lamented on Twitter that he didn’t invest in crypto soon enough. Now he’s making up for lost time. Most recently, Suh invested in Metaplex, a Solana NFT marketplace, which explains his advanced arguments defending the Solana Network.
Last week I announced my investment in @metaplex. I’ve been pretty quiet on my involvement in the crypto space. I like to do my diligence. But I have 100% conviction in this business. @solana is a remake the world kind of company, ” Suh said before bring up Solana’s transaction speeds.
Taylor Rapp
Los Angeles Rams safety Taylor Rapp appeared on Bitboy’s YouTube channel to talk about his interest in Ethereum and Ethereum-based NFTs. Rapp — who’s appearing in the Super Bowl with the Rams — released his own NFT collection back in March of 2021, to fight anti-Asian hatred.
Patrick Mahomes
Crypto this morning….. pic.twitter.com/x2k3vmWiNp
— Patrick Mahomes II (@PatrickMahomes) May 19, 2021
The best quarterback in the NFL right now, Patrick Mahomes, hasn’t specified what he’s invested in, but his reactions on Twitter make you think he’s definitely got some bags. Not to mention, Mahomes started his own line of NFTs back in March of 2021.
Von Miller
I APED IN!!! #BAYC #NewProfilePic pic.twitter.com/FhuT2h6juT
— Von Miller (@VonMiller) August 10, 2021
Long-time defensive star Von Miller bought a BAYC back in August. Since then, he’s become a pretty serious NFT guy. The evidence? Just check out his OpenSea profile. Also, Dapp Radar estimates Miller’s wallet to be valued at 1.3 million USD. Miller also just released his own set of NFTs on the eve of the Super Bowl.
Rob Gronkowski
Rob Gronkowski (a.k.a. Gronk) is no stranger to celebrity endorsements, just as Voyager is no stranger to wheeling and dealing. Gronk entered into a partnership with Voyager as a brand ambassador. The All-Pro tight end also launched his own NFTs back in 2021.
“Rob Gronkowski is a great athlete, and an even greater human being. He’s someone we all want to be friends with.” The idea behind the Gronkowski partnership is to make crypto more, “…useful, engaging, and entertaining,” said Voyager CEO Steve Ehlrich.
Jarvis Landry
Here’s a first for NFLers. Pro Bowl wide receiver Jarvis Landry has his own crypto. $JUICE is a social token that gives fans access to NFTs and rewards. A lot of people think social tokens are the future. But, if I’m being honest, Landry’s isn’t doing that great.
Drew Brees
The recently retired quarterback Drew Brees is a very recent Bitcoin acolyte. The former New Orleans Saints QB entered into an agreement with NYDIG to receive his Bitcoin through their BTC savings plan.
“For a long time, Bitcoin was pretty intimidating for me. The more I have immersed myself in the understanding of money, long-term value, and the history of finance, the importance of bitcoin became apparent,” Brees said via press release.
Justin Herbert
I can’t officially confirm whether San Diego Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is a crypto guy. However, he challenged his teammates to a bet during training camp. If he made a field goal, one of his teammates owed the sophomore star “100 dollars in crypto.” Herbert made the kick…
