Crypto has transitioned from a niche, conceptual basket of innovative tech ideas to full-on implementation and experimentation of those ideas. Today, major social media giant Reddit is committing to furthering our transition into a fresh, more privacy-focused internet.

Reddit Job Listing

Reddit is reportedly assembling a blockchain team to lead the development of a new layer of decentralized internet infrastructure. Specifically, the team is looking for a Staff Backend Engineer, according to a recent job listing posted by Reddit.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shape the future of the Internet. The Crypto team is a special team at Reddit designed to take on a moonshot project: building an entirely new model for the Internet and social media on top of blockchain and decentralized technologies. With Reddit’s 500 million users and tens of thousands of communities, our goal is to reach widespread, mainstream adoption of a more decentralized Internet where people, not platforms, have real ownership and control.

The way there is not easy. We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer who wants to work on hard, unsolved problems – such as making blockchain scale to millions of people, designing new incentive models for decentralized networks, and building the right tools to empower people and communities to take control of their lives online.”

The job is a tall order for those looking to take on the responsibility. The engineer will need to be able to develop backend services to support innovative user experiences on a global scale and have a deep understanding of databases, networking, computing, and implementing critical infrastructure.

The Next Generation Of The Internet

As highlighted in the job description, Reddit points out the big problem plaguing the current state of the internet.

“The Internet is the most important public square in history. It shapes economies and elections, relationships, and futures. Yet it is controlled by a handful of powerful platforms, who shape the Internet to their own advantage.

People have lost trust in the Internet. They don’t have control over it, and they don’t own the things online that are most important to them. It is time for a change. A big one. We need a new model for how the Internet should work – one that puts people back in charge – and the Crypto team at Reddit is leading the way.”

I’ve personally grown up my entire life with the internet. I’ve seen it grow from basic information pages, to streaming services, to social media, and all the rest that has come with the development of the internet. But zooming out a bit, it’s clear that the technology is still in its infancy. The current internet is only the first iteration of what’s to come over the next several generations. As a co-founder of Linkedin puts it,

I like to think of the next generation of the internet in this way; we’ve created the information, provided the data, and developed the overall “map” of the internet, we just don’t have a “physical” layer to interact with it all – we use it from a two-dimensional screen. However, I think as the internet grows, the next wave of development will be primarily focused on building out that “physical” layer on top to truly interconnect humanity online

Instead of Zoom breakout rooms, we’ll hop into virtual office spaces. Rather than scrolling through Instagram, what if you had an entire virtual gallery of all your friends to walk around in? Obviously, no one knows exactly how these platforms will manifest in full virtual reality, however, I think the trend is clear – humanity and technology are increasingly becoming one in the same, and we continuously develop new ways to integrate technology into the human experience.

If that is to happen, people are going to want to be able to take ownership of not only their physical belongings but their digital assets too. NFTs, crypto, and the like all represent the first generation of digitally-native assets that people can take true ownership of. The first iteration of the internet brought digital abundance – the next generation of the internet will bring digital scarcity.
