BAYC: Celebrities That “Aped In” in 2021
The one thing that was clear about 2021 is that one NFT project stole all the headlines: The Bored Ape Yacht Club. It seemed every day another celebrity was aping in…
Covered:
- Bored Ape Celebrities
- Celebrity Early Ape Adopters
- Athletes & Their Apes
- Musician’s & Their Apes
2021 was a year filled with many surprises, but one of the biggest may be the rapid success of the Bored Ape Yacht Club. We’ve talked about the BAYC project and how they became so successful in such a short period of time. Today, we take a look at some of the celebrities that “Aped In” in 2021.
From Early Ape Adopters to the hottest nightclub in Miami, we’ll review some of the most popular and their Apes.
Bored Ape Celebrities/Early Ape Adopters
- Steve Aoki : Aoki was one of the early Ape adopters among celebrities. He also wasted no time in adding to his fleet of Apes. He currently holds 10+ combined Bored & Mutant Apes. Apes aren’t the only NFTs Aoki owns, as he has become an avid collector and voice within the NFT community.
Found a futuristic primate pal for my punk! Say hello to Bored Ape #3719. Shout out to @pranksy for minting @boredapeYC #bayc pic.twitter.com/ShL1LVvAFF

- GaryVee : This one was probably a given, if you’re aware of GaryVee (a.k.a. Gary Vaynerchuk) and his interest in NFTs. When I was reviewing when exactly he bought his ape, it seems from the tweet below that he was extremely early. Using the information below, he may have even minted from launch. GaryVee has been a huge promoter of NFTs and their utility. Especially after the launch of his own successful NFT- VeeFriends.
i have 3 for weeks

- Dez Bryant : If you are a fan of Dez Bryant, you were introduced to the BAYC early on this summer. Dez was one of the first athletes to purchase his rare Ape and display him proudly as his Twitter PFP. Dez was new to the NFT world, but he caught on quick and absolutely made this catch (sorry Cowboys fans).
These are my apes!!! S/o to @j1mmyeth https://t.co/nucBnGl2Hi

Athletes & Their Apes
- Steph Curry : Sports fan or not, odds are you are are familiar with Steph Curry. He made a big splash, not only with setting the 3 point record but also with his Ape purchase this year. His purchase was one of the stronger “pumps” in this bull Ape run. It was convenient timing, as the next day he announced his partnership with exchange FTX.
Steph Curry is now part of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (“BAYC” in his Twitter bio), a collection of 10,000 unique Bored Ape NFTs.
The 2x MVP paid 55 ETH for this one, which is $180,000 — or, 0.39% of his $45.7M salary next season.

- Shaq : The Big Diesel aped in with the Mutant approach. We knew it was only a matter of time before Shaq got involved with NFTs. His purchase in late September is looking smarter by the day as the MAYC floor reached 12 ETH at the time of publishing. Shaq also recently launched his own NFT for charity and purchased Shaq.Eth.
Congrats to @SHAQ on your Mutant Ape purchase. Welcome to the Club! https://t.co/fin1FcwmMh

- LaMelo Ball : Not as early as GaryVee, but LaMelo was an owner of his BAYC in early June. He took notice of what was coming with the BAYC and pulled up from half court and hit nothing but net. He also launched his own NFT earlier this year and was also one of the hottest NBA Top Shot’s of 2021.

Musicians & Their Apes
Future : Future is one of the biggest hip-hop artists globally and an owner of a BAYC. He made his purchase in November for an impressive 48 ETH. His buy seemed to prompt others in the hip-hop world to add a BAYC to their wallet.

Post Malone : Like Steph Curry’s buy earlier in the year, Post’s buy created another bump in the BAYC bull run. The day after he announced his purchase, his new Ape was featured in his music video. In his new song with The Weeknd, his Bored Ape was displayed on his phone during the beginning of the video.
Welcome to the BAYC, @PostMalone. ??????https://t.co/w7pL8rtcUp

Eminem : To the surprise of some, Marshall Mathers has decided he wanted to get in on the fun. This week Eminem purchased his Ape for a whopping 123 ETH! Talk about making an entry into the NFT world.
