Polkadot Is A Sneaky Fun Crypto Project

When it comes to blockchain games, Polkadot is probably not the first protocol you think of. Which is fair. The interoperability protocol aims to be a “highway of blockchains.” Nothing about that screams fun. Useful, sure. Important, even. But not fun.

Which isn’t surprising, considering Polkadot founder Gavin Wood has never been described as gregarious. The former CTO of Ethereum (who’s largely credited with developing Solidity) isn’t the “cult of personality” type the way Vitalik Buterin or Charles Hoskinson are. He’s probably the last big name founder you’ll find making the rounds on YouTube.

The thing is, for as un-fun as Polkadot’s vibe may be, the smart contract protocol is way ahead of peers like Cardano and Algorand when it comes to the blockchain space. Same with its main competitor in the interoperability space, Cosmos, which is far behind Polkadot. And, sure, Ethereum is still light years ahead of Polkadot. But, thanks to high gas fees, they are looking to eat some of Ethereum’s lunch.

The following are three games on the Polkadot chain threatening you with a good time.

Polychain Monsters (Formerly: Polkamon)

Polychain Monsters recently changed their name from the obviously litigious Polkamon. Thankfully, with that potential negative catalyst out of the way, the project can continue to grow unhindered.

Like the game they are obviously inspired by, Polychain Monsters is a set of digital collectibles. Each collectible is a different monster with attributes that vary in rarity and skill. The collectibles are unlocked using the project’s native token PMON.

What makes this different and an update on Pokémon is the versatility afforded thanks to the blockchain. Players can trade their Poly Monsters or hoard them to their heart’s content. But if they want to play play-to-earn games with them, they can do that, too. The project promises a variety of on- and off-chain games. Meaning, unlike Axie, you can use your monsters all over the cryptosphere.

Domi Online

Domi is a serious competitor in the MMORPG on blockchain space. Flow-based Chain Monsters is ahead of it, but not only does Domi boast former Chain Guardians developers, it also has a DEV from Runescape. Runescape, if you’ll recall, is one of the most popular and enduring MMORPG games. Ever.

Domi will bring all the things that gamers love about games like Runescape and League Of Legends, except players will have ownership rights. So, the annoyances of losing characters and weapons during an update are gone. Not to mention, players can earn some cash while having fun playing for hours on end.

Though, the key here is, the game is still very much in development. The release of the alpha is expected sometime during quarter 3 in 2022. It’s IDO is set for December 15th on PolkaStarter.

Polka City

Polka City is a fully autonomous world building game where you can buy the virtual assets within a virtual city. Sounds like a ripoff of Decentraland, right?

Decentraland feels more like a love letter to crypto. It’s not necessarily a game, though you can make it one. In reality, it’s whatever you want it to be. Whatever you think the blockchain should be.

Whereas, Polka City is designed to be a play-to-earn game. Even their press release states, “Polka City guarantees a top-notch virtual investment experience for all categories of investors.”

Players will be able to earn money not just by flipping real estate, but also by allowing ads in the game appear on their property. They can also earn money by having gas get filled at their gas station. If Decentraland is a love letter, Polka City is a prospectus.
