Video game giant Ubisoft announced today that they are releasing their first NFT game, Ghost Recon, on December 9th. Ghost Recon will be available in beta to try alongside “three free cosmetic drops,” according to Ubisoft.
Ghost Recon is a part of their new division Ubisoft Quartz (aka Quartz), which is dedicated to developing games built on the blockchain. According to Ubisoft’s official site, Quartz, “aims at offering you more autonomy and agency when interacting with the in-game items that help you craft your own story.”
The game is built on the Tezos blockchain. As part of their press release, Ubisoft drew comparisons between Tezos’ chain and other, less environmentally friendly chains.
“Compared to the Proof-of-Work protocol used with Bitcoin, the PoS protocol offers a more advanced and environmentally sustainable alternative.”
Tezos Scores Huge Partnership
Layer-1 smart contract protocol Tezos heavily markets itself as the “eco” alternative to Ethereum — “clean NFTs” is the slogan heavily propagated on social media.
Tezos’ XTZ token is currently mooning on the news. XTZ is up a massive 30% since 12pm EST, and is currently trading in the $5.50 USD range. Recently, XTZ was hitting as low as $3.73 during last week’s extended market crash.
Overall, the layer-1 is up over 100% on the year. However, it’s still quite far from its all-time high of $9.12 back on October 4th.

Ubisoft Quickly Adopts The Blockchain
CryptosRus reported back in November that Ubisoft was exploring blockchain gaming, specifically play-to-earn games, via funding from Animoca brands.
Though, at the time, CFO Frédérick Duguet did hint that the company was looking to make its own games. “We’ve been working with lots of small companies going on blockchain and we’re starting to have a good know-how on how it can impact the industry, and we want to be one of the key players here.”
The report came out on November 1st. And now, it’s first blockchain game is coming out on December 9th.
Anger From The Video Game Community
One of the bigger complaints among gamers is the inability to hold onto assets when a game updates. Gamers often have to buy new skins and tools every time a game releases a new update. It’s frustrating and expensive.
That didn’t stop the video game community from responding to Ubisoft’s announcement with the sort of poetry meant for your worst enemy. Like this gem:
“Because of my personal view of NFTs and not because of the environmemt entirely, I will now proceed to uninstall anything related to you right now and cease further purchases of your games. That is all. For people that dislike Current Ubi’s marketing, just stop buying.”

And, of course, there was the requisite environmental FUD, too. Except, this person assumed the game will be on Ethereum, and not the eco-conscious Tezos.
Proof of stake isn't bad for environment at all, no more than you typing on ya phone.
Also, it isn't a fad. I recommend doing a little research on it all and you'll realize the potential. There's alot of misinformation out there, but a decentralized blockchain is a good thing
